Annual pet registration renewals are on the way for the 58,836 cats and dogs on the Sunshine Coast.
When it comes to Coast pets, the name Bella is still the most popular for cats and dogs (see Top 5 names for cats and dogs below).
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay reminded residents that cats and dogs must be registered with council each year.
“Registration is an important part of responsible pet ownership,” Cr McKay said.
“Despite there being more than 58,000 pets registered, it’s anticipated there are many more that are currently not registered but need to be.
“Registration information helps council to reunite lost pets with their owners and it also help us to plan for provision of services such as off-leash areas for dogs, education programs to promote responsible pet ownership and the animal pound.”
There are currently 48,647 dogs registered, an increase of 1508 on the same time last year, and 10,189 cats, 561 more than last year.
Significant registration fee discounts apply for dog and cat owners who have had their pets de-sexed and micro-chipped with the cost being just $14 or free for pensioners.
There is also the option of a lifetime registration for de-sexed and micro-chipped cats that is only $81 with no annual renewal required.
Registration is free for pets under six-months-old.
New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area now is the time to contact council and register your pet.
The annual registration period for cats and dogs starts on October 1 each year and runs through until September 30 the following year.
Renewal of pet registration is due by September 30, 2019.
Dog registration is required under the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 Queensland and cat registration is required under Sunshine Coast Council Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011.
There are several convenient payment methods available, including online payments via MyCouncil or BPay, over the phone or at a council customer contact centre.
