NSW budget: welcome commitment to ‘closing the gap’ initiatives

ALA

The NSW Government’s commitment to ‘closing the gap’ initiatives is a welcome inclusion in the state budget announced today, as is the focus on women and multicultural communities, says the Australian Lawyers Alliance.

“We were pleased to hear the Premier share that he is open to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to NSW Parliament or implementing another model that leads to truth-telling and treaty processes,” said Mr Josh Dale, NSW State President, Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA). “The subsequent support for ‘closing the gap’ initiatives in this budget is also a positive step.”

“We were also pleased to see the budget acknowledge the importance of extra funds needed for regional health as we know there is a pressing need. Recent NSW inquiries into regional and rural health, and birth trauma, have both highlighted the need for further funding of health services outside urban areas.

“Many of our members work with people who have been injured at work. We welcome the planned review of the government’s investment funds, including the Treasury Managed Fund, and the close monitoring of icare’s improvement targets.”
