Five musicians are set to elevate their careers and amplify their sound through the NSW Government’s inaugural Soundlab Residency Program in partnership with Arup.
Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin said the new SoundLab residency program will provide a distinctive platform and upskilling opportunity for the NSW-based musicians and sound artists.
“The SoundLab Residency Program, made possible through a partnership between Create NSW and Arup, is an unmatched opportunity for NSW artists to experiment, design and create in the high-end SoundLab facility at Arup.” Mr Harwin said.
“This unique program is set to unleash the talent and ambition of its inaugural residents, who I am confident will use the residency to design new work, with sound and music reflecting the talent, experiences, and people that make up NSW.”
Arup’s NSW/ACT Arts and Culture Leader, Chris Mercer said they were thrilled to partner with the NSW Government on the residency and work with the talented artists and musicians.
“This is an exciting and creative partnership with the NSW Government, and we hope to share our design and engineering expertise, while learning from the individuals and groups in residence,” Mr Mercer said.
“This residency embodies Arup and our support for local musicians and artists. We are fascinated with the way a space can support and inspire artists in the creative process, ensuring the functionality of arts and culture infrastructure is in line with the evolving needs of artists, audiences, and institutions.”
The five recipients are sound-artist Alexandra Spence; multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and experimental musician Dale Collier; composer, musician, vocalist, and creative technologist Freya Berkhout; and duo Flâneurs – the sound art project of brothers Ernest Aaron and Andrew Aaron.
As part of the residency each recipient will receive $2,500 in support and access to Arup’s high-end technical space to make music and sound. The program will involve four-week residencies, which guarantee successful applicants with access to the SoundLab for at least 10 hours per week.
