NSW police appeal after Aboriginal memorial maliciously damaged

Police are appealing for assistance from the community after reports an Aboriginal memorial has been extensively damaged in Sydney’s south-west.

Officers from Camden Police Area Command were called to the Australian Botanical Garden, Mount Annan, yesterday (Thursday 6 February 2020) following reports a sandstone statue within the Aboriginal Stolen Generation Memorial had been deliberately damaged.

Initial inquiries suggest the damage – which is estimated to be valued at about $50,000 – occurred between 10am on Wednesday (5 February 2020) and 10.45am yesterday.

Local detectives are investigating the incident and are appealing for information from the community to locate those responsible for the damage.

Anyone who was in the area during that time – particularly if they visited the Garden – or who witnessed suspicious activity to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

Information is treated in strict confidence.
