NSW police are responding to fatal crash near Queanbeyan

Emergency services remain at the scene of a fatal crash in the state’s southern tablelands.

Officers attached to Monaro Police District along with Fire & Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance paramedics responded to the Federal Highway, Bywong, north of Queanbeyan, about 7.30am today (Tuesday 8 November 2022), following reports of a crash.

Police have been told a Ford Falcon station wagon, travelling south, and a Mercedes B-double truck, travelling north had collided head-on. The truck then swerved and collided with a Toyota Hilux utility.

The Ford driver – a 28-year-old man – died at the scene.

The drivers of the truck and utility were uninjured and are assisting police with inquiries.

The 24-year-old truck driver has also been taken to Queanbeyan Hospital to undergo mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and has been forensically examined as police commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The southbound lanes of the Federal Highway remain closed with local traffic diversions in place. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and plan ahead as further delays are expected.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
