NSW police arrest man after fleeing pedestrian crash scene at Newtown

Members of the public have chased down and apprehended a man who ran from the scene of a serious pedestrian crash at Newtown this morning.

A small truck was travelling south on King Street about 11am (Tuesday 30 July 2019), when it hit a set of traffic lights and struck an 87-year-old woman in a wheelchair who was on the footpath.

The 34-year-old male driver allegedly fled the scene and was chased by several passers-by, who caught up with him on Wilson Street.

He was arrested by officers from Inner West Police Area Command and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for mandatory testing.

The injured woman was also taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

Road closures are in place while officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit examine the scene.
