NSW police arrest pair after suspicious death of Tao Cheng

Detectives investigating the suspicious death of a man found in the stairwell of a Sydney hotel earlier this month have arrested two men.

About 3pm on Wednesday 7 December 2022, emergency services were called to a hotel on Kent Street, Sydney, over concerns for a man’s welfare.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and found the body of a man in the stairwell of the hotel.

The man has since been identified as a 25-year-old Chinese national, Tao Cheng.

Strike Force Feyer, comprising detectives from Sydney City Police Area Command, with support from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, was formed to investigate the circumstances of Mr Cheng’s death.

Following inquiries and a public appeal, strike force detectives arrested a 27-year-old man at a licensed premises on Beamish Street, Campsie, about 6.30pm last Friday (16 December 2022).

He was taken to Campsie Police Station, where he was charged with murder. He appeared at court and was formally refused bail to next appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 16 February 2023.

About 11.15am yesterday (Tuesday 20 December 2022), a 25-year-old man was arrested with the assistance of the Queensland Police Service on Stradbroke Island in Queensland.

He was taken to Brisbane City Watch House, where he was charged by virtue of a NSW arrest warrant for murder.

Strike Force Feyer investigators will fly to Queensland to apply for the man’s extradition back to New South Wales in coming days.
