NSW police charge driver after Cringila hit and run

A man has been charged after a pedestrian was critically injured in a hit and run in the Lake Illawarra region yesterday.

Just after 10pm (Saturday 19 September 2020), a 24-year-old man was walking west on Lake Avenue, near Bethlehem Street, Cringila, when he was struck by a vehicle.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being airlifted to St George Hospital, where he underwent surgery for head and leg injuries.

The driver allegedly failed to stop.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, at 1pm today (Sunday 20 September 2020), police arrested a 21-year-old man at a home on Cocherane Street, West Wollongong.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive manner dangerous), fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, and negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm)

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Monday 21 September 2020).
