A man has been charged after a child died and two people were critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Sydney’s north west yesterday.
The crash happened at the intersection of Windsor Road and the M2 just after 7pm (Saturday 2 March 2019), when a Holden Commodore travelling on the westbound M2 off ramp, hit a median strip, crossed the northbound lanes of Windsor Road, before hitting a second median strip and striking a stationary Land Rover Defender and Holden Captiva.
The impact caused the Captiva to hit four other vehicles, a Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Toyota Aurion and Land Rover Discovery.
The Commodore driver, a 34-year-old man, allegedly ran from the scene.
A rear passenger in the Captiva, a 12-year-old boy, died at the scene.
Two other passengers, a 36-year-old woman and a five-year-old girl, were taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
The Captiva driver, a 38-year-old man, was not injured but taken to hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the Corolla, a 65-year-old man, and his passenger, a 58-year-old woman, were taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.
The occupants of the other vehicles were uninjured.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.
Officers from The Hills Police Area Command, with assistance from neighbouring commands, Traffic and Highway Patrol, the Dog Unit and PolAir, commenced a search to locate the driver of the Commodore.
Following inquiries, about 3am today (Sunday 3 March 2019), a 34-year-old man was arrested at a house on The Circle, Narraweena, and taken to Manly Police Station.
He has been charged with 10 offences including; dangerous driving occasioning death, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (x2), cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle (x3), aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – speed more than 45km/h over speed limit, and aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – speed more than 45km/h over speed limit (x2).
The Narraweena man has been refused bail and is expected to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 3 March 2019).
Investigations are continuing.
