NSW police charge man after investigation into serious crash on Sydney Harbour Bridge

A man has been charged following a serious crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge earlier this week.

About 6.55am on Monday 7 March 2022, a 27-year-old man was standing next to his vehicle ¬– a Toyota Kluger– on Sussex Street, Sydney, when he was approached by an unknown male, who allegedly assaulted him and stole his keys before getting in the vehicle and driving away.

A short time later, emergency services were called to the Bradfield Highway at Millers Point, after reports of a three-vehicle crash involving the same Toyota.

As a result, the Toyota flipped and landed on its roof. The driver – a 19-year-old man – was freed by passers-by before the vehicle caught fire and was destroyed by the blaze.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of a Honda CRV – a 53-year-old woman – was also taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of a van – a 27-year-old man– was trapped for some time before being freed by emergency services. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following extensive inquiries, about 12pm today (Wednesday 9 March 2022), police attended Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and charged the 19-year-old man with assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous and negligent driving – occasions grievous bodily harm.

The Queensland man was bail refused and the matter will be mentioned before Central Local Court by way of bedside hearing today.
