A man has been charged after a police officer was stabbed at Central Railway Station overnight.
The 30-year-old constable – attached to the Police Transport Command – underwent surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after being stabbed while responding to an incident on Platform One about 6.45pm (Friday 19 April 2019).
Police had been called to the station in response about an assault and were talking to two people when a 53-year-old man allegedly stabbed the officer in the back.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition. The officer underwent surgery and was released from hospital a short time ago.
Police from Sydney City Police Area Command will allege the armed man threatened three other officers with a hunting knife, before he was arrested after a Taser was deployed.
The man was initially taken to Day Street Police Station but later transferred to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was treated for a laceration to his head.
About 11.15am (Saturday 20 April 2019), the man was released and returned to Day Street Police Station where he has now been charged with:
- Wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
- Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful arrest
- Resist arrest, and
- Custody of a knife in a public place.
He has been refused police bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Sunday 21 April 2019).
