NSW police charge man over aggravated break-in and sexual assault of elderly resident

Detectives have arrested and charged a man over the alleged physical and sexual assault of an elderly woman during an aggravated break-in in Sydney’s Inner West at the weekend.

Just before 4am on Saturday (23 January 2021), officers from Burwood Police Area Command were called to Burton Street, Concord, following reports of a home invasion.

Police attended and were told a man broke into the home and physically and sexually assaulted the 92-year-old female resident before stealing a wallet and cash and fleeing the home.

The woman had activated her emergency medical alarm during the incident, which alerted her son, who attended the residence and contacted emergency services.

She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for injuries, including cuts and bruises, before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She has since been released into the care of her family.

A crime scene was established at the home, which continued to be forensically examined at the weekend.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad and Burwood Police Area Command established Strike Force Nelumbo to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, a 28-year-old man was arrested on Station Street, Homebush, about 5pm yesterday (Sunday 24 January 2021).

He was taken to Burwood Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence-people there; aggravated sex assault-inflict actual bodily harm on victim, sexually touch another person without consent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man has been refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Monday 25 January 2021).
