NSW police charge man over assault of police and hospital security at Sutherland

A man faced court today charged over the alleged assault of police officers and a hospital security guard in Sydney’s south yesterday.

Just before 6am (Saturday 3 August 2019), a 38-year-old man presented at Sutherland Hospital for treatment for pain.

He was aggressive towards staff and security was summonsed. Guards attempted to calm the man down, before escorting the man from the emergency department.

The man attempted to re-enter the hospital and allegedly became aggressive with security.

The guards again escorted the man from the hospital, and it will be alleged the man threw his head back and struck one of the guards in the face.

A struggle ensued and after the man calmed down, he was released by security and left the area.

About 9.15am, NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to a home at Miranda and were confronted by the 38-year-old man demanding he be taken to hospital.

The man allegedly spat at the paramedics and officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command were contacted, who arrested the man on arrival.

He was taken to Sutherland Police Station, where it will be alleged he threw a cup of water at police officers, before being taken to Sutherland Hospital for assessment.

As he was being escorted from hospital, the man allegedly attempted to bite one of the police officers on the arm and a struggle ensued.

The man was detained and taken to Sutherland Police Station and charged with behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse, common assault, intimidation (personal), two counts of assault officer in execution of duty, and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

He appeared in Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 4 August 2019) and was refused bail to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday (6 August 2019)
