NSW police charge man over night at museum in Sydney CBD

A man will face court today after he allegedly broke into a museum and stole artwork and a hat in Sydney’s CBD a week ago.

Just after 1am on Sunday 10 May 2020, a man allegedly entered the building on the intersection of College and William streets and walked through the premises for approximately 40 minutes.

Police will allege the man walked through multiple levels, attempting to gain access to rooms, looking through storage spaces and taking ‘selfies’ with exhibits.

The man allegedly stole a piece of artwork and a cowboy hat off a stand – believed to be owned by a member of staff – before he left the premises.

Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 25-year-old man after he attended Surry Hills Police Station about 5pm yesterday (Sunday 17 May 2020).

He was charged with break and enter, refused bail, and is due to appear at Central Local Court today (Monday 18 May 2020).
