NSW police charge three after elderly man crashed into by stolen car at Lake Illawarra

Three people have been charged with offences allegedly committed in a stolen vehicle in the Lake Illawarra area.

Earlier this week (Saturday 18 April 2020), a Kia Sportage was allegedly stolen from a business on the Princes Highway, Corrimal.

The vehicle was captured on CCTV on Monday (20 April 2020), after the occupants failed to pay for fuel at a petrol station in Unanderra.

About 9.45am yesterday (Wednesday 22 April 2020), the vehicle was involved in a crash with a vehicle on Winnima Way, Berkeley.

The driver and two passengers fled the scene on foot and failed to offer any assistance to the driver of the second vehicle, a man aged in his 80s, who sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and commenced inquiries, locating the two passengers – a 17-year-old boy and 24-year-old woman – and the 25-year-old male driver at a house nearby.

The trio were arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The 25-year-old man was charged with steal motor vehicle, never licensed person drive on road, dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception (x2), never licensed person drive on road, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner (x2) and drive recklessly/furiously.

The 24-year-old woman was charged with dishonestly obtain property by deception and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

The pair were refused bail and are due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 23 April 2020).

The 17-year-old was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in a children’s court on Tuesday 14 July 2020.

Investigations are continuing.
