A man and woman have been charged with traffic offences after a pursuit in an allegedly stolen car in the Murrumbidgee region.
Just before 5pm yesterday (Thursday 25 August 2022), officers attached to Griffith Highway Patrol attempted to stop an allegedly stolen maroon Holden Commodore on Little Road, Griffith, but the driver allegedly failed to stop.
A pursuit was initiated a short time later, until the Commodore travelled down a dirt fire trail after running out of fuel.
It will be alleged that as officers entered the vehicle, the driver accelerated, causing a male senior constable to be thrown to the ground. A leading senior constable was still in the vehicle when the driver allegedly accelerated.
The vehicle crashed into a tree a short distance away and the 31-year-old driver, and his passenger, a 29-year-old woman, were arrested. Police received minor injuries.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police located and seized two modified nylon batons.
Further checks revealed the driver’s licence had been disqualified.
It will be further alleged the vehicle was stolen from a Phillip Place address in Griffith, between Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May 2022.
Both were taken to Griffith Police Station where the man was charged with seven offences, including:
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,
- Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence (two counts),
- Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner,
- Resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty,
- Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc, and,
- Shoplifting.
He was denied bail to appear in Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 7 September 2022.
The woman was charged with one count of be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.
She was granted conditional bail to appear in Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 14 September 2022.
