Statement attributed to A/Deputy Commissioner Dean Smith APM, Corporate Services.
The NSW Police Force (NSWPF) procured overt ballistic vests in 2012, that were issued to commands throughout the state.
In 2017, integrated light armour (ILAV) and covert light armour (CLAV) were issued to individual officers at their request.
In 2022, the Deputy Commissioner, Corporate Services requested the Asset Management Unit to undertake a state-wide reconciliation.
Within this audit a number of vests were identified as being unaccounted for, and a number of deficiencies were identified.
As a result, the NSWPF Asset Management Unit was tasked with reviewing and updating the management processes for all NSW Police ballistic vests. This process now rests with the NSWPF Armoury.
The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) was provided the outcome of the audit, as well as the ongoing management process for all NSW Police ballistic vests. LECC advised the NSWPF they were satisfied with the measures and strategies put in place by the NSWPF.
