Members of the NSW Police Force are joining the community in support of the inaugural ‘Step Out Speak Out’ walk in the Eastern Beaches today.
The event aims to raise awareness of domestic violence and asks men to stand up and say no to violence against women.
The walk will commence at 7.15am (Friday 22 November 2019) from High Cross Park in Randwick, and finish at Grant Reserve at Coogee for a community barbeque.
Members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate in the walk alongside police.
NSW Police Corporate Sponsor for Domestic and Family Violence, Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones APM, said it’s important for the community to come together to raise awareness of an issue that affects people from all walks of life.
“Domestic violence is a crime that does not discriminate. Our officers see it on the job throughout the state each and every day,” Assistant Commissioner Jones said.
“This crime crosses all socio-economic, cultural and age boundaries, which is why we need people to understand they have an obligation to report all incidents of domestic and family violence – it could literally save someone’s life.
“We’re not just talking about physical assaults, we’re also talking about behaviour that intimidates, terrifies or coerces a person. That is also classified as domestic violence.
“There is no such thing as an innocent bystander where this crime is concerned. NSW Police Force is committed to bringing perpetrators to justice and supporting victims.
“We stand in solidarity with the community and together, we can give people the confidence to challenge and change the disrespectful values, attitudes and behaviours surrounding this criminal offence that we have zero tolerance for.”
