NSW police investigate suspicious fire in water catchment area near Wollongong

Police are appealing for help from the public following a suspected deliberately lit fire north of Wollongong.

About 10am Saturday 7 December 2019, smoke was seen to be billowing from the end of a fire trail in the Cataract Lake Foreshore.

The fire, which spread to approximately 50m by 50m, was extinguished by Water NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service crews shortly after.

Detectives attached to Wollongong Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for information regarding two men who were seen in the area around the time of the fire, as they may be able to assist with inquiries.

The first man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with fair skin and a slim build. He was wearing long black pants, a black cap, black canvas shoes and carrying a black backpack and a fishing road with an orange protective sleeve.

The second man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with tanned skin and a slim build. He was wearing long dark pants, a white cap, black canvas shoes and carrying a black backpack and a black and red sleeping bag.
