Bayside’s coastal and marine environment is continuing to be impacted by the climate emergency. Our foreshore provides a wide range of recreational, economic and lifestyle opportunities for the community, and we’re committed to protecting Bayside’s beaches and preserving areas of cultural importance.
Noticeable erosion is continuing to impact Dendy Beach and Bathing Boxes, and renourishment works are scheduled in November 2026, ahead of the summer season.
In the coming week’s you will notice sand being loaded into trucks from the northern end of Brighton Beach (adjacent to the Park Street ramp) and moved to the southern end of Dendy Beach, between the southern terrace public toilets (adjacent to Norwood Avenue) and the southern point of Dendy Beach (adjacent to Holloway Beach point, near Gould Street).
During lower tide times, beach access will be intermittently interrupted by trucks movements along the sand between the north and south project areas.
The renourishment area between Norwood Avenue and Gould Street will be closed for the entire project duration, and beach walkers will need to use the Bay Trail between Green Point and the southern terrace toilets (Holloway beach will remain open).
Works are anticipated to be complete by late November, weather permitting.
We last completed renourishment in this location in May 2022, and we anticipate needing to restore Dendy Beach sand levels to protect the shoreline and the iconic Bathing Boxes every 3 to 4 years.
Our planning and preparedness for future events are guided by current data, science, and government policy and legislation including the Marine and Coastal Act 2018, the Marine and Coastal Policy 2020), and Bayside’s Coastal and Marine Management Plan (CMMP).
The CMMP strategically prioritises competing demands and provides an action plan to sustainably manage Bayside’s coastal and marine environment, providing direction on the roles, responsibilities, future use and management of Bayside’s coastal and marine areas.
The project is identified in the endorsed Coastal and Marine Management Plan and included in the 2026-27 capital works budget
