A man will appear in court today charged after a police sergeant was bitten by a dog following an arrest in Sydney’s south-west overnight.
Just before 1.30am (Sunday 28 February 2021), officers from Bankstown Police Area Command attended a home on Marden Street, Georges Hall, following reports of a domestic-related incident.
On arrival, police spoke to a 59-year-old woman outside the home before attempting to speak to a man, who had barricaded himself in a rear garage with a dog.
Police will allege the man verbally abused police before inciting the dog to attack.
A short time later, the 52-year-old man was arrested in the garage.
After the man was placed in the caged truck, the dog ran onto the street.
About 2am, the woman secured the dog, but as a male sergeant was speaking to her, the dog attacked him, biting his face.
He sustained serious facial injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition awaiting surgery.
The man was taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with common assault (DV), two counts of set on, urge dog to attack, bite, resist officer in execution of duty, and use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence.
He has been refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.
The dog was seized by local council at the scene.
