A police operation has now concluded following an unauthorised protest in Sydney’s CBD, with one woman issued with a Penalty Infringement Notice (PIN) for breaching public health orders.
A high-visibility police operation was launched in response to an unauthorised protest today (Friday 12 June 2020), to ensure the safety of the community and the participants.
As the NSW Police Force did not receive notice (Form 1) for the protest, it was deemed unauthorised under the public assembly framework.
General duties officers from Sydney City Police Area Command and across the Central Metropolitan Region were assisted by specialist police from the Public Order and Riot Squad, ODIN, Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and the Mounted and Dog Unit.
During the operation, a 24-year-old woman from Panania was arrested after failing to comply with a move on direction.
She was subsequently issued with a PIN for breaching a public health order and released.
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mick Willing, said he was disappointed that approximately 300 protesters chose to disregard the public health orders and attend the rally.
“It was made very clear during the week that the protest was unauthorised, and people should put the health and wellbeing of themselves and others first, by not attending,” Assistant Commissioner Willing said.
“I would like to remind those considering attending tomorrow’s unauthorised protest that this assembly has been prohibited by the NSW Supreme Court.
“Police will be out in force again to ensure compliance with that ruling – so stay at home.”
