NSW police urge fans to bring their A-game ahead of Sydney Derby

Police are urging A-League fans to be responsible and look out for one another, with the first Sydney Derby to be played at Bankwest Stadium tomorrow night.

Gates open at 5.45pm (Saturday 26 October 2019), with thousands of fans expected into the stadium before the Western Sydney Wanderers kick off against Sydney FC at 7.30pm.

Officers from North West Metropolitan Region will be assisted by specialist units to maintain a high-visibility presence before, during and after the match to ensure the safety and security of all spectators, officials and players.

North West Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones, reminded supporters to keep the rivalry family-friendly with the event close to being sold out.

“The Sydney Derby is one of the most anticipated matches in the A-League season, so we’re urging people to enjoy themselves and be there for the love of the game,” Assistant Commissioner Jones said.

“We have been working very closely with Football Federation Australia (FFA), security officials and the respective clubs to provide appropriate support and maintain an enjoyable and safe atmosphere for the community.

“We are expecting an exciting match and are hoping that fans heed our warnings regarding the lighting of flares. Not only is it dangerous and irresponsible – it is illegal, and we will take action,” he said.

Given the significant crowds expected, ticket holders are urged to leave the car at home and make use of free public transport.

“Football fans are reminded that the A-League clash is an integrated ticketing event so travel via public transport to and from Bankwest Stadium is included in the cost of your ticket,” Assistant Commissioner Jones said.

“There is no on-site parking for the general public at Bankwest Stadium. There are a number of parking stations in close proximity, but spots are limited.

“Those who drive should allow extra travel time and expect delays when travelling to and from the area. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to exercise patience.”
