Nurse Practitioner Week 2024 runs from Sunday November 10 to Saturday November 16. This annual week highlights the essential contributions of Nurse Practitioners in delivering vital healthcare and addressing gaps in access to primary care.

In August 1965, the first Nurse Practitioner program was developed at the University of Colorado. However, it wasn’t until 1990, during a nursing conference in New South Wales, that the movement gained significant traction. By the year 2000, only two Nurse Practitioners had been accredited and began working in remote and regional areas, as well as in emergency care.

Over the next nine years, every Australian state and territory recognised the profession and established a legislative framework for Nurse Practitioners. Now, 24 years later, there are more than 2,200 Nurse Practitioners working across Australia.

What’s the difference between a Nurse Practitioner and a Medical Practitioner?

While both professions can prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, and order clinical tests, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an experienced Registered Nurse who has completed a master’s degree and received endorsement in their area of specialty. In contrast, a Medical Practitioner typically completes a bachelor’s degree followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree, and then undergoes junior training before specialising.

How long does it take to become a practicing Nurse Practitioner?

To become a Nurse Practitioner, a Registered Nurse must have practiced full-time for at least three years and held a senior clinical nursing position within the last six years. Full-time study for the program takes about one and a half years. Additionally, obtaining endorsement involves submitting formal letters of support, demonstrating professional development, and having a robust Curriculum Vitae.

These requirements ensure that Nurse Practitioners are both highly skilled and deeply committed to their field. We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and expertise that our Nurse Practitioners bring to the lives of West Australians impacted by cancer.
