NZ Police Arrest Driver After Fleeing Across Auckland

Police arrested a man after fleeing from Police and driving dangerously across Auckland this evening.

Earlier this afternoon, after 4pm, the Police Eagle helicopter sighted a vehicle connected to a man sought by Police in the Mt Roskill area.

Senior Sergeant Mike Wickman says the vehicle was tracked to the Mt Wellington area.

“Police have attempted to engage with the vehicle, but the driver has driven off and begun driving in an erratic manner toward the Southern Motorway,” he says.

“Eagle has continued to monitor the Subaru being driven erratically northbound through evening traffic towards Market Road.”

Exiting the motorway, the vehicle continued into Newmarket.

“On several occasions the vehicle has been observed on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missing other vehicles and pedestrians,” Senior Sergeant Wickman says.

“The appalling behaviour continued onto the North-Western Motorway, where the Subaru has been involved in minor collisions with several vehicles on the Newton Road onramp.”

The Subaru continued west and exited at Te Atatū Road, where the vehicle has stopped because of damaged sustained.

Police units have immediately taken the 54-year-old man into custody.

Charges will be laid.

“It’s fortunate that the damage is only to vehicles, and no one has been seriously injured as a result of this reckless behaviour.”
