On path to a better trails network

The City is
keen to learn about the potential improvements that can be made to the
municipality’s shared trails network.

In an
engagement process that begun Monday, residents are encouraged to identify
missing links, issues and opportunities with our network of shared and off-road
paths.

This will
inform the City’s Shared Trails Masterplan, which aims to increase the number
of cycling and walking trips through a connected, safe and inviting network.

We are seeking
feedback on the gaps or missing links that are important to you and would
enable you to move more freely and safely throughout Greater Geelong.

Through the
masterplan, we aim to identify priorities and principles to guide capital works
and strategic planning projects.

This will
ultimately help develop a list of short-term and longer-term upgrades and
initiatives that the City can progressively implement over the coming years.

As part of the 30-year
Clever and Creative Vision, it was identified that the community wants to make
travel between suburbs easier through a network of pedestrian and cycling
paths.

The network
would connect to key destinations, such as employment, education, sport and
recreation areas.

Providing
quality facilities would increase active transport, improve the health and
wellbeing of communities, reduce congestion and benefit the environment.

An improved
network would also contribute to the local economy, maximise opportunities to
increase cycle tourism and attract cyclists to Geelong.

The shared
trails network will use the off-road Principle Bicycle Network paths and
Strategic Cycling Corridors as a base.

We want the
network to be accessible and respectful of all users, from pedestrians to
cyclists and those on horses.

The community can
take part in the engagement process online via an interactive map throughout
July and August.
