Research degrees will be showcased for the first time at QUT Open Day on July 30.
QUT PhD students will be on hand to explain how future students can pursue their passion, make a difference and expand their career horizons by choosing research as a career pathway.
“Having a PhD internationalises your degree and can lead to high paying jobs in both industry and academia,” QUT Vice-President (Research) Distinguished Professor Christopher Barner-Kowollik said.
“Whatever your interest area, there’s a research degree for you. You can choose from a diverse range of research topics or work with one of our expert academics to develop your own.
“Undergraduate students can also try their hand at research during their degree as part of a paid internship with QUT researchers to see if it’s a good fit.”
At Open Day, each QUT faculty will have a PhD student on hand to answer questions about research degrees, and chat about their student journey.
Student presentations about real-world research will run across both the Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses, with talks about projects in health, communication, design, education, engineering and business.
PhD student Melody Dubronin, is conducting research with the QUT Centre for Microbiome Research into how gut-friendly bacteria can be turned into probiotics to treat digestive disease.
Ms Dubronin originally trained as a linguist but had a lifelong interest in health and personal experience with gut health issues.
“So I decided to study a diploma of science to learn more about this field, and subsequently started my PhD to contribute to the greater aim of curing gut-related disease,” Ms Dubronin said.
She hopes her research will one day benefit not only those with digestive disease, but people with other health concerns like depression, obesity and diabetes, which are increasingly being linked to gut health.
Scholarships are available for domestic and international students, and Indigenous students are also supported to undertake research careers.
