Cancer Council WA recently delivered the second accredited version of our Cancer Education Course for Aboriginal Health Professionals in partnership with the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) and funded by Tackling Indigenous Smoking.

The course was held from Monday 17 to Friday 21 February 2020 and a total of fourteen health professionals from Broome, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Western Desert, Albany and the Perth metro area attended the course.

Over the five days, participants learnt about many aspects of cancer, from prevention right through to palliative care and survivorship. The course included interactive presentations from representatives from Cancer Council WA, WA Cervical Cancer Prevention Program, WA Department of Health Bowel Cancer Screening Program, WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network, staff from the Sir Charles Gairdner Cancer Centre and the Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA).

The participants were also taken on tours to Milroy Lodge, and the Cancer Centre at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where they visited the chemotherapy, radiation therapy and haematology units.

To conclude the week, participants delivered a group presentation and completed a case study assessment to put what they’d learnt into practice. Overall a great week was had by all, with many participants stating they had gained a lot of knowledge and skills to take with them and use in their roles.

We would like to thank everyone involved for their help in developing and delivering this course and we look forward to working in partnership with AHCWA to deliver the course again in the near future.
