The Palaszczuk Government has contributed $100,000 in funding for a new community centre and men’s shed which officially opened today at Withcott in the Lockyer Valley.
Visiting the Steve Jones Community Centre, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the hub was a fitting tribute to a revered former Mayor.
“This community centre is the vision of former Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones, who passed away in February 2017,” Mrs D’Ath said.
“Steve was an avid campaigner for the centre in its early stages, so it is wonderful that the community has chosen to honour his work and commitment in this way.
“This centre will create a thriving community hub where locals can come together in a safe space, in an inclusive setting.”
In addition to being a men’s shed, the centre at Meadows Road Withcott will provide a space for local events and meetings and serve as an evacuation centre during natural disasters.
“This centre has been completed thanks to the hard work of the Withcott Helidon Lions Club, which received a Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) Commemorative Grant of $100,000 to help fund the project,” Mrs D’Ath said.
“The GCBF, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is going stronger than ever.
“In the latest funding round in June the Palaszczuk Government distributed 11 grants totalling more than $1.1 million, and it’s communities like Withcott that are reaping the benefits.
“I want to congratulate Withcott Helidon Lions Club and the other local organisations, businesspeople and tradies who helped complete the project.”
Over the past 25 years, GCBF has distributed more than $902 million to hardworking community organisations throughout Queensland.
