Partnering to deliver new homes for older Tasmanians

Guy Barnett, Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing

All Tasmanians deserve to have a roof over their head and to achieve this we need a collaborative and innovative approach to deliver for our community.

The Tasmanian Government is partnering with Community Housing Providers to help deliver the social and affordable homes that Tasmania needs. These partnerships are critical to delivering our commitment of 1500 homes by 30 June 2023.

Today we visited two units in Perth designated for people aged over 55 who are priority applicants on the Housing Register. Built by Wilson Homes, and managed by Centacare with funding contribution from the Tasmanian Government, this project is a great example of how we need to work with Community Housing Providers and the building and construction sector to deliver our $1.5 billion commitment to 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.

This is why our new housing authority, Homes Tasmania, is so important. It will allow us to continue these types of partnerships and be agile and innovative on other ways to work together to meet the growing demand on our Housing Register.

Homes Tasmania will be responsible for delivering the Government’s 20-Year Housing Strategy. This is currently being developed and will identify the types of homes we need and where they are needed and who they will provide for. The Strategy will guide where our 10,000 homes are built around the State.

Tasmania’s housing market has boomed in recent years, combined with significant and unexpected population growth with almost 50,000 additional people calling Tasmania home, changing the dynamics of our housing demand.

To address this, Tasmania must evolve the way we deliver services, including the type of services that are needed, and specifically address the needs of individual cohorts like youth, women with children and men and women over 50. Properties like these ones that are designed with specific cohorts in mind.

These houses were built under the Community Housing Growth Program which is delivering new social housing properties in 24 Local Government Areas across Tasmania. The program leverages funding as well as skills, knowledge and expertise from the community and building and construction sectors to provide homes for those who need them most, while also underpinning jobs in every region of the State.
