In light of yesterday’s ABS data, Labor is again calling for the government to extend payroll tax relief to businesses to extend protection for Tasmanian jobs.
Shadow Treasurer David O’Byrne said more support for businesses is essential to keeping Tasmanians in jobs.
“It is clear that Tasmania’s economy is hanging by a thread with job losses continuing. With billions of dollars of Federal Government support in the JobSeeker and JobKeeper schemes set to roll back at the end of the month, these figures are likely to get worse.
“The government offered relief to business on payroll tax earlier this year, and it can be done again – reporting shows there is still money available in the scheme.
“Extending payroll tax relief lowers the cost of doing business, and any initiative that will help alleviate the cost of employing Tasmanians in the short term should be grabbed with both hands.
“There’s no justification for not extending the initiative, to spare Tasmanian businesses more of the financial impact of COVID-19, and help those businesses keep Tasmanians in jobs.
“As Federal Government support starts to wind back, payroll tax relief will help save jobs – and every Tasmanian job is worth saving.”
