Law Society of NSW

The Law Society of NSW, the peak body for the state’s 36,000 solicitors, has welcomed plans by the NSW Government to establish a Parliamentary Joint Committee to hold a public inquiry into coercive control.

NSW Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence , Mark Speakman SC MP, has also issued a comprehensive Discussion Paper on coercive control to help guide discussion on the issue.

President of the Law Society of NSW, Richard Harvey, commended the Attorney General for committing to a detailed look into the issue of coercive control and providing the opportunity for key stakeholders and members of the public to provide input.
“The Law Society is looking forward to drawing on the expertise of the profession and providing a detailed submission on this important, but complex issue,” Mr Harvey said.
“Formalising the process with an Inquiry by a Joint Parliamentary Committee is an appropriate way to give this issue the deep analysis it deserves.
