Works to improve pedestrian connectivity in the vicinity of the intersection of Smith and Searcy Street in the city centre are commencing from Monday, 19 April.
The works include installation of a pathway around the Banyan tree at the intersection and a permanent change to the flow of traffic to a one-way exit only partially along Searcy Street to Smith Street.
There will be no entry to Searcy Street from Smith Street after the works are completed, but there will be normal entry and exit to and from Searcy Street at Cavenagh Street.
Lord Mayor Kon Vastalis said: “The works at the Banyan tree area are necessary to improve the shared footpath linkage and help provide some protection for the tree.
“The introduction of a one-way exit onto Smith Street has been introduced as the widening of the path around the tree has reduced the width of the road in this location. It will also assist with road traffic safety for all road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the vicinity.”
“Road closures will be in place during the works along Searcy Street. Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks you for your patience and cooperation.”
Works are anticipated to take two weeks to complete and heavy machinery will be in use for the duration of the works, typically between 8am and 5pm, which may cause some noise disturbance.
