Following a prosecution by the Plumbers Licensing Board, consumers are reminded that water supply, sanitary, and drainage plumbing work must be carried out by licensed plumbers.
A Kalgoorlie handyman was fined $1,500 and ordered to pay $571 in costs at Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on 4 May 2026 after pleading guilty to carrying out plumbing work without the required licence – an offence under the Plumbers Licensing and Plumbing Standards Regulations 2000. He is not named because the court granted a spent conviction.
The court was told that in May 2025 the man carried out sanitary plumbing work and alterations to water supply at a Kalgoorlie home.
The man did not have a plumbing licence required for this type of work.
The work was found to be non-compliant with plumbing standards. Defects included incorrectly installed hot and cold pipework, resulting in cross-connection, and an incorrectly installed shower wastepipe.
While the man later removed the defective work at no cost to the homeowner, the Board’s prosecution reinforces why unlicensed plumbing work is unlawful and can create serious risks to public health and safety.
Consumers are encouraged to check if a plumber is licensed by using the online licence search or the ServiceWA app .
