People’s Parade comes to Perth

A People’s Parade for footy fans, appearances by footy legends, Forrest Place being transformed into “Footy Place” and live broadcast sites are all part of the City of Perth’s celebrations for AFL Grand Final Week.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said hosting the AFL Grand Final was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Perth and called on all Perth footy fans to get behind the historic event.

“The eyes of the nation and the world will be on Perth as it hosts one of Australia’s biggest sporting events and the City of Perth is giving the West Australian public the chance to get involved in the celebrations,” he said.

“That includes a People’s Parade on grand final eve which will see supporters of both teams gather at either end of the Murray Street Mall. The fans will then be led by marching bands playing the clubs songs to “Footy Place” where they will get to see legends from both teams and celebrate with them.”

The Lord Mayor said businesses around the city were embracing the grand final.

“Banners now adorn every street, while iconic buildings across the city are lighting up in support of the event and from next week Council House will be lit up with a Premiership Cup and both team colours,” he said.

From Monday 20 September, Forrest Place will become ‘Footy Place’, featuring AFL players and legends, panel interviews, team mascots and music performances during lunchtime.

On the big day, Northbridge Piazza will become an official Toyota AFL Grand Final Live Site hosted by the City of Perth.

The AFL Grand Final game between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons will be broadcast live on the Northbridge Piazza LED Screen.

Sporting AFL colours, Northbridge Piazza will feature family-friendly pre-game entertainment suitable for the entire family from 4pm on Grand Final Day.

With entertainment continuing into the night, roving performers will entertain alfresco diners, city visitors and those enjoying the atmosphere along James and Lake Streets.

There will also be an encore screening later in the evening for those who want to relive the historical game.
