Performers hit streets of Stonnington

From jazz duos to string ensembles, the streets of Stonnington have come alive with the addition of some very talented artists.

Dotted around street corners and popular shopping precincts, street performers are entertaining passers-by as part of Stonnington’s Street Performer Program, running until 16 May.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Kate Hely visited Prahran Square to check out what was on offer, bumping into the Little Notes, a five piece mini-orchestra led by Carol O’Malley.

“The [Street Performer] program is a wonderful way to showcase the talents of these young musicians,” said Cr Hely.

“I’m so impressed with the amount of diverse talent that Stonnington has to offer.”

Not far from Prahran Square – on Toorak Road, South Yarra – the Whoopee Project’s Carl Polke and Ania Reynolds could be heard serenading shoppers and diners, with some funky saxophone tunes.

Ania, an award-winning composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist commented that she felt it was important for the community to see and hear more live entertainment.

“It’s great to get the exposure from street performing, but it gives me so much more pleasure to see kids and families stopping by to listen. Music is often only heard these days via earphones and iTunes or YouTube, so it’s great to give music an identity,” Ania said.

Ballad-master guitarist Zac Smith followed, performing an hour of nostalgic folk songs.

This weekend, Latin Spanish Guitarist Anthony Vartuli will be strumming his stuff on Union Street, together with accomplished sitar player David Balaban, and comedian Karen Udovenya who will be stopping foot-traffic on Claremont Street, South Yarra.

Cr Hely is encouraging the community back into the city to support these artists and local business.

“This unique program features more than fifty acts across Stonnington, many with recognisable names and accolades, all helping to re-energise and breathe life back into the community.

“As we recover from an incredibly difficult 2020, I encourage you all to support our talented arts community,” she said.
