Permit scheme for fire prevention works

The Victorian Government has announced

that metropolitan Melbourne residents are allowed to seek an exemption to travel to regional Victoria to undertake fire preparedness work at their properties.

Applications are being taken from Wednesday 6 October, for travel into regional Victoria beginning from Monday 11 October.

The exemption will be provided to eligible property owners via a letter of support from the relevant regional Victorian council.

The City of Greater Geelong encourages property owners from metropolitan Melbourne to engage local contractors to undertake any immediate fire preparedness work where possible.

If this is not possible, details on how to apply to undertake emergency preparation activities are included below.

Who is eligible to apply?

People who pay rates for properties that are included in a Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) within the City of Greater Geelong.

To determine if the property is located in a Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO), enter the address on the VicPlan website.

Applications for travel into Greater Geelong must be completedonline.

What are the conditions of entry?

If approved, the property owner or a nominated representative will have 72 hours from the date of travel to undertake the work.

Property owners from metropolitan Melbourne will be required to adhere to the restrictions, including curfew, that are in place in metropolitan Melbourne.

All terms and conditions outlined in the letter of support and travel exemption must be adhered to.

Our fire hazard inspection program

Our Fire Prevention Officers will endeavour to commence inspections in the North Area on 1 November 2021, in the Central Area on 15 November 2021 and in the East Area on 6 December 2021.

You will need to ensure that your property complies by the appropriate dates and remains compliant.
