Pharmacists able to vaccinate kids

Territory parents with children aged 10 to 15 are now able to visit their local pharmacy for a flu shot.

Executive Director Medicines Management, Research, Transformation & Change at the Top End Health Service, Associate Professor Bhavini Patel, said today the move brings the Territory into line with pharmacy practice across Australia.

Until now Territory pharmacists were able to administer influenza vaccines only to people aged 16 and over.

Previously children in the 10-16 age bracket had to visit a General Practitioner.

“For many Territory families, a trip to the local pharmacy is a lot more convenient than visiting a GP,” A/Professor Patel said.

“Annual vaccinations are an important way of preventing the flu and associated complications.

“Together with good hand-hygiene and staying home when you are unwell, vaccinations help protect people and reduce the spread of influenza in our community.

“It is recommended everyone over the age of six months gets the flu vaccine.”

The changes were developed in conjunction with the NT branches of the Pharmacy Guild and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

A/Professor Patel said before being permitted vaccinate children aged 10-15, Territory pharmacists need to complete an additional unit of study as required by the Australian Pharmacy Council’s Immunisation Standards.

“The science on vaccinations is absolutely clear. They’re safe, effective and save lives.

“I believe this initiative is a positive step which will provide many Territorians with extra choice when it comes to flu vaccinations,” A/Professor Patel said.
