Dating back to the 1940s, the quaint little Maroochy River boathouses jetties of Bradman Avenue have become an iconic part of our Sunshine Coast’s rich history.
The five boathouse jetties are direct links with the Coast’s past, which is why council is proposing a planning scheme amendment to protect and manage these and other local heritage places and character areas.
Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray said the five boathouse jetties nestled on the banks of the river, adjacent to Bradman Avenue, were excellent examples of our region’s coastal heritage.
“Residents and visitors to the region would have many fond memories of these jetties,” Cr O’Pray said.
“Heritage is one of the most rapidly expanding tourism segments in terms of visitor numbers globally and I’d urge anyone in our community to get involved and have their say on proposed heritage preservation.”
The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and an important part of effectively managing and accommodating that growth is to ensure we understand, protect and conserve our region’s heritage so that it is available to be enjoyed and understood by current and future generations.

One of the ways in which we can achieve this vision is by working with our community to honour our yesterday, celebrate our today and build our tomorrow.
Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said as our region continues to grow, it is more important than ever to preserve our historical sites.
“Council recognises that heritage places and areas have different meanings to different people,” Cr Baberowski said.
“But one thing remains constant and that is our heritage places are important to our region’s identity and character and are irreplaceable.
“Heritage sites are a rich part of our social fabric and tell the story of our local communities – commemorating gathering places, areas of learning, sites of scientific research and achievement, places of reverence and of public administration.
“They also epitomise our particular Sunshine Coast lifestyle and the character of our local areas.
“The proposed amendment reaffirms the need to continue to protect heritage places and character areas through the planning scheme.
“While council has worked closely with expert historians to prepare the proposed amendments for the listings of local heritage places and character areas – we’re now calling on the community to share their insights and experiences.
“Council believes there are many benefits associated with being heritage listed, but it’s your opinion that really matters to us.
“Through consultation activities like this, we can better understand the community’s views and understanding of heritage, and therefore better manage and protect it for future generations.”
The proposed amendment and full listing of the heritage places and character areas will be available from Monday, August 19 by visiting council’s website.
Feedback received during the community consultation period will inform the proposed amendment, which will then be presented to council for consideration.
