Council is calling for residents with an interest in affordable housing to join its Low-Cost Rental Initiative Working Group.
The new group will help identify and support practical solutions to increase the supply of low-cost and long-term rental housing across the Shoalhaven.
Expressions of interest are now open for four community representatives.
Council encourages applications from people who:
- live in the Shoalhaven, including those who reside in the region’s north, centre and south
- have an interest in affordable long-term rental housing
- are willing to work collaboratively with Council and other stakeholders to develop practical initiatives
- have strong community connections and can support awareness and advocacy efforts
Membership of the Working Group will also include four councillors and Council’s CEO or nominee. One councillor will be chair, while the other three will represent each ward. Council officers can attend the group’s meetings to provide specialist advice.
Community representatives will be appointed for a two-year term, with the working group meeting quarterly.
The group’s role includes:
- serving as a forum to share information on affordable rental housing solutions
- advocating for an increased supply of low-cost and long-term rentals in the region
- contributing to the development of strategic documents related to low-cost and long-term rentals
- recommending actions that may support increasing the availability and lowering the cost of long-term rentals.
It will make non-binding recommendations to Council and be guided by relevant Council strategic documents, including the Shoalhaven Affordable Housing Strategy 2024, Shoalhaven 2035 Community Strategic Plan and Shoalhaven 2040 Local Strategic Planning Statement.
