Pouring bitumen into a pothole is a great solution but pouring abuse onto the people doing that hard work isn’t.
There aren’t many things more frustrating than potholes, but recently that frustration has boiled over into personal abuse of the teams doing the work to make them safe.
Kempsey Shire Council Coordinator Maintenance Response, Garick Cahill, said crews should be able to go to work each day and no cop abuse from people for doing their job.
“We understand the community is frustrated and we share this frustration with them but crews are doing their best to complete this often thankless task,” said Mr Cahill.
The material used to patch potholes is less effective in wet weather and is only a temporary fix until arrangements can be made to repair the road properly. The average cost to repair 1 kilometre of road is $1 million and, in most cases, this is not a financially sustainable solution.
“There’s a lot of patching repairs work ahead and we are regularly returning to the same locations as wet weather causes the potholes to form again. We ask for residents to be kind, patient and understand the challenges crews are facing now.”
