Pledge welcomed for multicultural and community hub

Cardinia Shire Council has welcomed an election commitment from Jason Wood, Federal Member for La Trobe of $12.5 million towards a project to deliver a local multicultural and community hub.

Council has engaged with key stakeholders and the community on developing a feasibility study and concept plans for a South-Eastern Multicultural and Community Hub.

The hub would offer a number of rooms and spaces used by communities from different cultural backgrounds. There would be spaces for meetings, activities, and outdoor areas.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield said council welcomed the funding pledge towards this important local community project.

“As one of the fastest-growing communities in the state, it’s imperative all levels of government work together to deliver what we need.

“Cardinia Shire is one of the top three municipalities in Melbourne experiencing the largest percentage increase in new communities from non-English speaking countries.

“The development of an integrated, intercultural hub would allow new residents from a range of backgrounds, cultures and faiths to connect to relevant social, education and support opportunities, greatly assisting in their settlement within the shire.

“Previous engagement with our multicultural community has identified key challenges such as a lack of multicultural support and education services and a need for accessible and affordable venues for socialisation, education and community events.

Council acknowledges previous funding of $350,000 from the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Program for the development of a feasibility study.

The Feasibility Study, presented at Council’s December Meeting, found that a new intercultural hub is an essential node within a council-wide approach to integrating and servicing diversity.

“The need is clear – and we will continue to call for the required funding towards delivering a multicultural and community hub for Cardinia Shire.”
