Police acknowledge yesterday’s convictions in the High Court at Wellington in relation to the death of 82-year-old Ian David Moller in 2024.
A 41-year-old from Naenae and a 34-year-old from Stokes Valley were found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and arson. A third man was found not guilty of murder, manslaughter, and arson.
Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd says in October and November 2024, three arsons occurred at a Hanson Grove property, one of which resulted in the death of Mr Moller who was asleep in his bed.
“I acknowledge Mr Moller’s family and the strength they have shown during this difficult time and hope these verdicts bring them some relief as they continue to process the untimely and unnecessary death of Mr Moller.
“This case has been complex and extensive since the homicide investigation was launched. I thank the investigation team for their dedication. Mr Moller was a retired man who should have been safe in his own home, and yesterday’s verdicts are a result of the investigation team’s tenacity and meticulous work to hold the men accountable.
“Police would like to thank the wider Stokes Valley community for their continuous support throughout our investigation. Especially the homes and businesses that provided important CCTV footage, and the witnesses who provided statements and testified in Court.”
The two men convicted have been remanded in custody and are due to be sentenced on 17 November 2026.
A 24-year-old from South Wairarapa earlier pleaded guilty in relation to two earlier fires at the same property and will be sentenced on 2 December 2026.
