Police arrest man in counter terrorism operation in Melbourne

Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), which form the Joint Counter Terrorism Team, conducted an operation in Melbourne earlier today (20 June).

Operation Kozjak resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old Roxburgh Park man at his place of work in Roxburgh Park just after 8.30am.

It will be alleged the man arrested was involved in undertaking preparations to travel overseas to engage in hostile activities.

The man has been charged with the following offence and will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tomorrow:

• Preparations for Incursions into Foreign Countries for Purpose of Engaging in Hostile Activities, contrary to Section 119.4 of the Criminal Code (Commonwealth)

The operation is ongoing however at this time police do not anticipate further arrests.

Furthermore, the arrest is not linked to any previous operational activity.

Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police would like to reassure the community there is no ongoing threat against the Victorian community as a result of this investigation.

Victoria has well tested, cooperative, counter terrorism and emergency management plans in place and constantly monitor and assess our preparedness to respond to a range of emergencies.

The Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Team and the Victoria Police Counter Terrorism Command maintains strong links with the intelligence and other partner agencies which gives us the best possible understanding of emergency issues.

There is no current or ongoing threat as a result of this operation and the community should continue to go about their daily business and report any suspicious activity to triple zero (000), Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the National Security Hotline on 1800 1234 00.
