Police arrest man in possession of cash, taser, drugs and firearm in Morwell

A man has been charged with possession of drugs, weapons and a firearm after being arrested in Morwell earlier today.

Churchill police officers were conducting a routine patrol when they saw a man riding a motorbike, with no number plates, on Vary Street just after 12.30pm.

Due to the speed the bike was travelling at, officers decided not to intercept due to safety concerns.

A short time later the officers saw the bike parked near a shop on Well Street with the rider inside the shop.

The rider was arrested after a short foot chase and struggle with police.

A search of a backpack, belonging to the rider, resulted in police allegedly finding a shotgun broken into three pieces and wrapped in cloth, a black taser, a knife, an amount of cash, six rounds of ammunition, three shotgun cartridges filled with ice and a set of scales.

The 34-year-old Morwell man has been charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, possess ammunition, possess prohibited weapon, possess traffickable quantity of methylamphetamine, possess proceeds of crime, assault and traffic offences.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on Monday 24 February.
