Police arrest two men after dumping stolen car in Laverton

Two men have been arrested after they dumped a stolen car in Laverton early this morning.

The pair were first spotted by detectives in the allegedly stolen car in Kelvin Grove in Werribee about 1.15am.

Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives tried to intercept the blue Toyota Yaris before it sped off.

The vehicle, which was followed by the airwing for some time, was detected travelling about 170km/h on the Princes Freeway, with its head lights off,

Police utilising ground units and the airwing followed the car throughout a number of suburbs including Ravenhall, Werribee, Port Melbourne, Altona and Laverton.

Stop sticks were successfully deployed in Kororoit Creek Road while the car was being pursued before the car slowed and was dumped in Laverton.

The men fled only to be arrested a short time later.

One of the men was found in a front yard of a home in Tyquin Street Laverton before the other man was found after being tracked down by police dog Hadar in the backyard.

The 19-year-old passenger of the car has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and has been bailed to appear in Werribee Magistrates’ Court in October.

The 28-year-old driver from Kensington has been charged with theft of a motor car, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, reckless conduct endangering life, disqualified driving and other traffic matters.

It is expected he will appear at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday 9 July, 2020.

Whilst committing the offences, the offenders were also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and were issued a $1652 penalty notice.

The directions by the Chief Health Officer, under the State of Emergency declared in Victoria, have been enacted to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.
