Police charge man after making false carjacking report in Lakemba

A man has been charged after allegedly fabricating a report about being carjacked at gunpoint in Lakemba last week.

The 32-year-old man reported he was outside an address on Garrong Road about 8.20am on Monday 15 July 2019, when he was approached by two males and threatened with a firearm.

He claimed the men demanded the keys to his 2016-model silver Toyota Camry, before one of the men left in the vehicle. Police were told the other man left in a red-coloured sedan.

The incident was later reported to officers from Campsie Police Area Command, who commenced inquiries.

The following day (Tuesday 16 July 2019), the man contacted police to inform them he had located the Toyota parked in Monterey Street, Granville South.

Officers attended and sighted the vehicle and a second car – a small red sedan – parked at the location.

Three men were spoken to, before being arrested and taken to Granville Police Station for questioning. They were later released pending further inquiries.

Following further investigation, about 7pm last night (Monday 22 July 2019), the 32-year-old man was arrested at Campsie Police Station.

He was charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, and two counts of make false accusation with intent subject other to investigation.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 6 August 2019.
