Police charge man after pursuit at Newcastle

A man will appear before a Newcastle court today charged following a pursuit yesterday.

About 6.55am (Wednesday 25 October 2023), police from Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a Volkswagen Polo on Newcastle Road, Wallsend, for the purpose of a random breath test.

When the Volkswagen failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

Police will allege that as the vehicle approached the intersection of Metcalfe and Thomas Street, Wallsend, it collided with two vehicles in the intersection.

The drivers of those vehicles did not report any injuries to police at the time of the incident.

The Volkswagen driver then fled the scene and was arrested nearby a short time later.

The 23-year-old man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for assessment, before being taken to Waratah Police Station.

The Speers Point man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, not give particulars to other driver, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v), and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 26 October 2023).
