Police Charge Man After Travelling 218km/hr Near Yass

A man has been charged with a number of driving offences, after he was allegedly detected travelling at 218km/hr in the State’s south.

About 12:30am yesterday (Sunday 22 February 2026), officers attached to Yass Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the Hume Highway, just north of Yass, when they allegedly detected a sedan travelling at 218km/hr in a 100km/hr signposted zone.

Officers pulled over the vehicle and checks revealed the 47-year-old male driver had not held a valid driver’s licence since 2009.

A roadside breath and drug test allegedly reported a positive result for both.

He was arrested and taken to Yass Police Station where he allegedly returned a reading of 0.88 grams of alcohol. The oral fluid test allegedly returned a positive result for cannabis and methamphetamine. The results have been sent off for secondary testing.

He was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, never licensed person drive vehicle on road and drive with mid-range PCA and illicit drug.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Yass Local Court on Thursday 26 March 2026.
