Police charge two after carjacking at Maitland

Two men have been charged following an alleged carjacking at Maitland earlier this month.

About 12.45pm on Tuesday 12 September 2023, police were called to an aquatic centre on Les Darcy Drive, Maitland, after reports of an alleged carjacking.

On arrival, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were told two women, aged in their 60s, were approached by two men before the men allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to the women.

Officers established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Police will allege in court that the vehicle was located destroyed by fire near Singleton later that night.

Following inquiries, a 25-year-old man was arrested at a home on Barton Avenue, Singleton, on Wednesday 13 September 2023.

The Raymond Terrace man was taken to Singleton Police Station where he was charged with aggravated steal from the person, steal from the person value greater than $15000, damage property by fire/explosives, and use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail to appear before Singleton Local Court on Thursday 14 September 2023, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 8 November 2023.

Following extensive inquiries, a 47-year-old man was arrested at Maitland Police Station about 3pm yesterday (Tuesday 26 September 2023).

The Rutherford man was charged with two counts of steal from the person value over $15000.

He was refused bail to appear before Maitland Local Court today (Wednesday 27 September 2023).
